Smokeless tobacco is not safer than smoking, despite what some people think. Just because you are not smoking tobacco, doesn't mean it is not dangerous. People who chew are dip snuff are at the risk of developing:
- Cancer of the mouth
- Pulling away of the gums from the teeth
- Decay of exposed tooth roots
- White patches or red sores in the mouth that can turn to cancer.
In addition, research shows, the dangers of smokeless tobacco are not limited to the mouth. Studies indicate it can lead to other cancer, stroke, and heart disease.
Nicotine is also higher in smokeless tobacco than in cigarettes. Once you start using tobacco it is hard to stop because of the addictiveness of nicotine is contains.
Smoking During Pregnancy
Smoking during pregnancy is strongly discouraged. It affects you and the baby's health, before, during and after the baby is born. Your bloodstream carries the nicotine, carbon monoxide, and many other poisons you inhale while smoking directly to the baby. Smoking while pregnant will:
- Reduce the amount of oxygen you and your baby receive.
- Increase the baby's heart rate.
- Increase the chances of stillbirth and miscarriage.
- Increase your baby's risk of developing respiratory (lung) problems.
In addition, research on the effects of smoking while pregnant indicates a higher risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Being Tobacco Free
What strategies can you use to avoid using tobacco?
- Stand by your values. Make decisions that keep you healthy. Fight peer pressure.
- Choose friends who do not use tobacco products.
- Avoid activities where tobacco products may be used. Don't put yourself into situations where you will be pressured to smoke.
- Maintain healthy habits. Instead of participating in activities where tobacco products are used, find other activities that involve a healthy lifestyle.
- Talk with your parents, non-smoking friends, and trusted adults about tobacco products.
