First Aid and CPR: First Aid

Tutorial iconTutorial: Controlling Burns

Burning match

Burns, whether caused by fire, lightening, steam, or chemicals, can be life threatening, and psychologically devastating. All burns damage the skin. The first line of defense for the body is the skin, which prevents entry of bacteria, insulates the body and its organs, and prevents water loss. Severe burns to this organ place the body and its systems in great jeopardy. Burn victims must be treated quickly and appropriately to prevent infection, shock, or even death.

The treatment for burns has changed dramatically in the last thirty years. Your parents may remember putting butter or potato scraps on burns, which actually increased scarring and disfigurement. Modern treatment for severe burns includes using gauze and elevation. You will learn how to make the victim comfortable, reduce the risk of infection, and prevent further damage until professional medical help arrives.

View the tutorial below on what to do for someone who has burns. It is a good idea to take notes while watching as you will be responsible to know the proper procedure.
