Social and Consumer Health: Making Good Health Choices

How to Choose a Doctor: Part One

Choosing a Doctor

Our health is the most important thing we have, and we know that choosing health care could be a matter of life or death.

There are many considerations in choosing a doctor. First, is what kind of doctor do you want? Would your health be best served by an MD or a DO? Both of these physicians are highly qualified but their training and their focus differ. You will need to do some research to make this decision.

Specialists

Many physicians seek specialized training in one aspect of medicine. There are a variety of specializations one can pursue. Oncology is the study of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Pediatricians specialize in treating childhood diseases, including issues of adolescence. Cardiology focuses on conditions of the cardiovascular system and ophthalmologists treat problems with the eyes. Some health professionals believe in treating a patient's mind, body, and spirit—this is known as holistic treatment.

Nurses, both LPNs an RNs are essential to effective health care. The licensed practical nurse handles the routines of office and hospital care. Registered nurses require more training and have more responsibility for patient care. Duties of and RN include treatment and education of patients, performing diagnostic tests, evaluating results, providing care, and follow up treatment.

The Physician’s Assistant is frequently an RN first. The PA works under the direct supervision of a physician and may diagnose and treat common conditions, order and interpret tests, and carry out therapy.
