The ratio of side of a pentagon is 1:3:2:4:6 and the perimeter is 48 inches.  Find the length of each side.

Side 1: 1x
Side 2: 3x
Side 3: 2x
Side 4: 4x
Side 5: 6x

1x + 3x + 2x + 4x + 6x = 48
16x = 48
x = 3

Side 1: 1x = 1(3) = 3 inches
Side 2: 3x = 3(3) = 9 inches
Side 3: 2x = 2(3) = 6 inches
Side 4: 4x = 4(3) = 12 inches
Side 5: 6x = 6(3) = 18 inches

The ratio of side lengths of a rectangle is 3 to 4.  The area is 48 square centimeters.  Find the length of each side.

Side 1: 3x
Side 2: 4x

Area = (3x)(4x) = 48
12x2 = 48
x2 = 4
x = 2 (We can ignore the negative solution, since we are working with side lengths.)

Side 1: 3x = 3(2) = 6 centimeters
Side 2: 4x = 4(2) = 8 centimeters
