Tour de France The idea for a several-day race came from the chief reporter for a cycling magazine, Georges Lefèvre. Desgrange found the funding and Lefèvre covered the race as best he could, sometimes on a bike himself, and sometimes by train to get ahead of the peloton. There has been a Tour de France every year since 1903, except from 1915 through 1918 (World War I) and in 1945 (World War II).
