Section Three - Part A Le Cyclisme Le Tour de France It can be said that Le Tour de France started in the 1890's with a young legal clerk called Henri Desgrange. He would take days off from his day job to compete in a cycling cycling races. One day, a client complained after seeing him in public with bare calves, forcing Desgrange to choose between the legal profession and his bicycle - he chose his bicycle. The idea for a several-day race came from the chief reporter for a cycling magazine, Georges Lefèvre. Desgrange found the funding and Lefèvre covered the race as best he could, sometimes on a bike himself, and sometimes by train to get ahead of the peloton. There has been a Tour de France every year since 1903, except from 1915 through 1918 (World War I) and in 1945 (World War II). Back
