Key ConceptsPossession
Nous avons parlé de la possession en français il y a longtemps.

Il y a deux formes que nous pouvons utiliser:

C'est le livre de Susanne.

C'est son livre.

You can demonstrate possession in either of these two ways above.

noun + de + name of person
C'est la voiture de Madame Simon.

short form of the possessive adjective + noun
C'est sa voiture.

Review the short forms of the possessive adjectives here:

mon/ma/mes notre/nos
ton/ta/tes votre/vos
son/sa/ses leur/leurs

There are some other possessive words that will come in handy in French. These are possessive pronouns. They show possession and replace a noun introduced by a possessive adjective. Regarde:

Elle a son livre et j'ai mon livre. Tu as le tien?
Nous avons nos sacs. Vous avez les vôtres?
Je n'ai pas ma calculatrice. Elle a la sienne?
Il cherche son cahier. Où est le nôtre?

These possessive pronouns replace the noun instead of using it again. Here are all of the forms of these pronouns, both masculine and feminine.

le mien la mienne les miens les miennes
le tien la tienne les tiens les tiennes
le sien la sienne les siens les siennes
le nôtre la nôtre les nôtres les nôtres
le vôtre la vôtre les vôtres les vôtres
le leur la leur les leurs les leurs

Notice that our (adjective) and your (adjective) = notre/votre while our (pronoun) and your (pronoun) = nôtre/vôtre. The difference is the accent. Be careful!

Let's look at some rules to help us know when to use these adjectives/pronouns.

Arrow These adjectives/pronouns always agree in gender and in number with the nouns they modify or replace.
mon ami--le mien; mon amie--la mienne; mes amies--les miennes
Arrow They are used with a definite article to take the place of a noun.
Jeanette et moi, nous avons des patins. Les miens sont nouveaux. Les siens sont très vieux.
