Art in New France In the 17th century, when what is now Canada was colonized, it was called New France because it was claimed for the King of France. Its capital, Québec City, was founded in 1608. Unlike the United States, most of the people who settled in New France were Roman Catholic. They started building churches in every town and village. This created a demand for furnishing for these churches. Most of the furnishings were made of wood. These highly skilled woodworkers developed a folk art, specific to Canada. This carving is called Going Home for Christmas and depicts French fur traders coming in from the wilderness bringing furs in their canoes. These men were called coureurs des bois - those who run through woods. This piece tells of the legend of the coureurs des bois who sold their souls to the Devil so they could get back to their sweethearts on time for Christmas. Thanks to http://www.virtualmuseum.ca/ for photo of the woodcarving.
