“The Big Fella Upstairs”
Before you develop a piece of communication such as a speech, it is often very helpful to have a model. This way, you can see how someone else has done it, and you can begin thinking about your own.
For a model of a eulogy, you will experience Margaret Thatcher’s short eulogy for Ronald Reagan. Margaret Thatcher was the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States, and he held the office from 1981 to 1989. During the 1980s, both Prime Minister Thatcher and President Reagan developed a great friendship that is evident in this eulogy.
Go to the American Rhetoric Web site, where you will find video, audio, and text to the speech. Choose how you want to experience Thatcher’s speech. For instance, if you are a visual learner, you might watch the speech. If you are an auditory learner, you might listen to the speech. You could even listen to the speech while reading the text. However you choose to experience Thatcher’s eulogy for President Reagan, keep the following questions in mind:
1. How did Thatcher organize the eulogy? (Pick from chronological, tribute, main point, or thematic and tell why)
2. What details did Thatcher use to develop the speech?
You should write these questions on a small piece of paper (with lots of space in between them) and take notes on the answers as you read through the speech.
