Module 4: Section 3
Introduction to Literary Elements: The Importance of Setting
As you become exposed to a wide array of literary genres and styles, you discover how important the setting can be to a unique story. A setting on its own is just a place but partnered with other story elements it provides the framework for the plot. The setting often causes the story to unfold in a specific way. As you read a story, consider how the events might be different if they happened in another time or place.
Some stories contain themes that are timeless. Others may be closely tied to the elements of setting such as time and location. As you read this section’s selections, consider how the plot is impacted by the setting, and the primary themes in each work. Consider: How would the story be different if it were removed from this time or location? Would the types of characters represented still make the same choices? Would those choices cause a similar outcome?
