Discussion: Elements of Democracy 30 points
Democratic systems can be slow, and dictatorships efficient, but it is most unlikely that you would choose to live in a dictatorship. In this activity you will compare a democratic system to an authoritarian dictatorship.
Scenario:
Everyone is concerned about the new governments in Russia, Eastern Europe and Iraq. Are they democratic? You have been asked by the President to form a committee to establish some criteria for evaluating the new governments. You will be visiting the countries one month before, during, and after scheduled elections. The President wants two lists.
- A list of specific factors you will observe during that time to decide if the country is truly democratic. Be specific. Don’t simply say "free elections." What will you observe if the elections are truly free? Be descriptive. What other items will be on that list?
- Make a list of things you would observe if the country is authoritarian. Again be specific. Don’t just say people will have no rights. Be specific and descriptive. What will you see to know that they don’t have rights? Citizens in prison with trials? What else will you see?
Collaboration:
Use the discussion forum to communicate with your classmates your ideas for the two lists as well as to add items to your own lists. You may want to use this t-chart to organize your ideas. Remember, the President wants specific, observable information. If you can’t see it, if it doesn’t have an active verb, you must break it down and be more specific.
Once you’ve developed comprehensive lists, share it with your classmates. Comment on peer lists, suggesting additions and deletions with reasons for your suggestions. You should work together to finalize a list you all agree is comprehensive and complete.
