Frecuencia: Introduction

Flamenco

All over Southern Spain, the activity that many like to take part in and go to watch is flamenco. Flamenco is a type of dance that, as you can see in this picture, is also a style of clothing and, in fact, a whole attitude.

The dance actually dates back to the region of Southern Spain centuries ago. It is a mixture of various cultures that at one time or another inhabited this region. There are ancient Roman relics that actually picture the flamenco style in daily life. Later, other cultures also demonstrated a strong like of rhythm, music and dance.

The Arabs, who were in the region and dominated the area now known as Andalucía from 711-1492, had a strong influence on the evolution of flamenco.

In the 1400s, gypsies settled in this region. They took the style of music and dance and began to interpret it in their own culture.

Since then, this has been a popular musical style in the area and is a beautiful interpretation to see. The music is lively and the colors are beautiful. The dance is full of rhythm and is studied by many, both in Spain and in other countries.

There are many things that people living in Spanish-speaking countries like to do. Eating out, going to theatres, concerts, movies, operas, symphonies, etc., are common activities that the Spanish-speaking population enjoys. In this unit, we’ll continue to explore some of these activities and learn to talk about them.
