La Comida: Introduction

Las Tortillas

It is very common in many parts of Mexico and other parts of the Spanish-speaking world for people to shop and prepare their foods fresh every day. In some cases, people purchase pre-made food items to use at home. This lady is making tortillas that people will buy.

The average Mexican consumes several tortillas with each meal. Some Mexicans even use the tortillas as a kind of utensil, pinching off part of the tortilla and then using it to pick up or pinch other foods on their plates. They are one of the main staples of the Mexican diet. They are made from white wheat flour and also from corn meal flour. The ones eaten in Mexico are generally always from corn meal flour.

The tortillas are generally best when made by hand (as opposed to in a factory). Some people buy the dough from a tortillería and then make them at home on their own comal. Now that more women are going to work in Mexico, this is changing some. Some families actually purchase their tortillas at a tortillería instead of making them at home.

Don't forget that you can prepare some recipes of typical foods very easily. One such recipe would be the one for a "batido" - a cold "milkshake." Here is a recipe for one you might want to try. It is easy and very refreshing.

Batido de Fresa
Fresas
Leche
