In Unit 2, we are going to talk about different musical styles. You will have to visit different websites to hear samples of these musical styles.

There are several types of traditional Japanese music (Hogaku). Some of the most important ones are:

  • Gagaku: Ancient court music, strongly influenced by China, Korea and other countries in Asia. It is performed mainly at Court among the powerful nobility and upper classes.

  • Biwagaku:
    Music played with the instrument Biwa, a short necked lute with four strings plucked with a large plectrum.

  • Nogaku:
    Music played during Noh performances. It basically consists of a chorus, the Hayashi flute, the Tsuzumi drum, and other instruments.

  • Sokyoku:
    Music played with the instrument Koto, a zither with 13 strings. also accompanied by Shamisen and Shakuhachi.

  • Shakuhachi:
    Music played with the instrument Shakuhachi, a 55 cm long flute. The name of the flute is its length expressed in the old Japanese length units.

  • Shamisen Ongaku:
    Music played with the instrument Shamisen, a kind of guitar with only three strings. Kabuki and Bunraku performances are accompanied by the shamisen.

  • Minyo:
    Japanese folk songs that existed in different provinces in Japan.
