こ そ あ ど Words Demonstrative pronouns (これ,それ,あれどれ)are used to point out or to indicate a specific person, thing, place or direction. The following chart shows the primary demonstratives in Japanese. Demonstrative adjectives (この,その,あの, どの) are followed by a noun or noun phrase. こ word is used when referring to things, people and places close to the speaker. そ word is used when referring to things, people and places close to the listener, or slightly removed from both the speaker and the listener. あ word is used when referring to people, things and places far away from the speaker and the listener. ど word is used asking which person,
thing or place is being referred to.
