Module Objectives
After you have completed this section, you will be able to:
- Describe the main types of health: mental and emotional, social and consumer, and physical health.
- Apply the DECIDE Model of decision making for healthy life choices.
- Describe mental and emotional health adn how it affects you and your family.
- Research information about a mental or emotional health and evaluate it based on your values and beliefs.
- Explain the causes and effects of stress and strategies for managing stress and coping with depression.
- Develop communication skills that demonstrate empathy and respect for self, family, and others.
- Explain the causes, symptoms, and treatment of disorders such as ADHD and eating disorders.
- Explain issues related to death and grieving, and strategies to prevent suicide.
- Apply the decision-making skills that promote mental and emotional health.
Standards
In this module we will explore the following Standards for Mental Health:
- Identify signs and symptoms of mental illness (physical and emotional stress, eating disorders, clinical depression) and potential suicide
- Analyze verbal and nonverbal skills needed to develop and maintain healthful interpersonal relationships
- Describe the influences of group identity on development of self-esteem and relationships with others
- Analyze strategies to manage and diminish aggressive behavior; including bullying, harassment, hazing and gangs
- Evaluate personal coping strategies that address deployments and military community life
- Evaluate community mental health resources
