Even though French is spoken in 36 countries as the official or unofficial language, as you know, French comes from France! France is located in Western Europe and is about the size of the state of Texas. Here is some interesting information on France:

  • According to the 2005 census, the population is 60,650,000 people.
  • The median age is 39 years old.
  • The life expectancy is 79.6 years. That's an average for men and women.
  • There are 22 regions (provinces) and 96 departments.
  • The national holiday is Bastille Day - July 14 (1789)
  • There is universal suffrage. Everyone can vote at 18 years old.
  • The flag is called the "tricolore." During the French revolution, the royal white was combined with the red and blue of the Parisian flag. The blue was part of the arms of Paris since since the Middle Ages.
