Quelle
heure est-il?
Sometimes you need to know something more specific about time. You may
need to know at what time something takes place.
In order to ask this, we use, A quelle heure?
to say at what time.
Notice how this question appears and then how the response is worded:
A quelle heure est-ce
que tu vas au jardin publique samedi? |
Je vais au jardin publique à
cinq heures de l'après-midi. |
A quelle heure êtes-vous
dans la classe de français? |
Nous sommes dans la classe de français à
deux heures de l'après-midi. |
Note that A capitalized does not have to have
the accent. The lower case à, however, does. That's what keeps
it apart from a in il a..., one of the forms of the
verb avoir.

Now it's your turn to answer a few of these questions asking at what
time something takes place. Note that many times in English, we simply
say: "What time are you going to the park on Saturday?" when
the correct wording should really be: "At what time are you going
to the park on Saturday?" We have to use the à in
French.

Il
est deux heures dix
In order to add minutes to a time, we simply add the number of minutes
to the sentence. These times are digital time:
2:10 |
3:20 |
5:30 |
7:50 |
Il est deux heures dix. |
Il est trois heures vingt. |
Il est cinq heures trente. |
Il est sept heures cinquante. |
Just like in English, you can also use the words "quarter"
to express 15 past or before the hour and "half" to express
30 minutes past the hour.
2:15 |
3:30 |
5:15 |
7:30 |
Il est deux heures et quart.
|
Il est trois heures et demie.
|
Il est cinq heures et quart. |
Il est sept heures et demie.
|
A
few things to note here:
- When you use quart or demie, you must precede it
by et.
- Demie is in the feminine because it actually describes the
word heure, which is feminine. How much of the hour? One-half
of it.
There is another way to express time when the minutes have gone past
30.
Il est deux heures moins
10. - It is two o'clock minus 10. (1:50)
Il est deux heures moins
le quart. - It is two o'clock minus
a quarter. (1:45)
What's the pattern here? You go to the closest hour - so, after 30 minutes
past the hour, the closest hour is the next one - and indicate the number
of minutes left to get to that hour.
Both ways are commonly heard in French, so you need to be able to recognize
each one. Here are the two ways together:
2:40 |
3:35 |
5:45 |
7:50 |
Il est deux heures quarante.
Il est trois heures moins
vingt. |
Il est trois heures trente-cinq.
Il est quatre heures moins
vingt-cinq. |
Il est cinq heures quarante-cinq.
Il est six heures moins le
quart. |
Il est sept heures cinquante.
Il est huit heures moins dix.
