Key ConceptQuelle heure est-il?

Look at the clocks and learn how to express time in French.

clock clock clock clock

To say what time it is, say il est ... plus the number of hours. Notice that you must include the word heure(s) when you are telling time. Il est six heures NOT Il est six.

Here's some more vocabulary...

boy eating midnight

You cannot say Il est douze heures for either noon or midnuit. The only time you may hear that is if someone is using military time - il est dix-huit heures (it's 18:00 hours). This is used for transportation and when it is important to be precise about the time. Military time is used much more commonly in France than here.

To specify that a time is in the morning, the afternoon or the evening, you'll need to learn the following vocabulary (don't use AM and PM):

breakfast nap time evening out clock
in the morning
in the afternoon
at night
sharp, exactly

practice Au Travail! Write this exercise in your notebook.

Practice answering the questions about what time it is when you are in different places. Click on the question once you have answered it to see a sample correct response. The first one is done for you.

1. Tu es au jardin publique. Il est six heures de l'après-midi.
2. Tu es au supermarché.
3. Tu es à la maison.
4. Tu es en clase de français.
5. Tu es à l'église dimanche.
6. Tu es à la piscine.
7. Tu es au cinéma vendredi.
8. Tu es au magasin de musique.
