Finding the audience, purpose, perspective and tone of texts is just the beginning of the reading experience. The next step is analyzing what the author is trying to say about the subject. You need to discover the main idea or theme. Unfortunately, most writers don't make it that easy for the audience. Usually you need to follow the clues to determine the main idea or theme of a text. Sam Spade, a seasoned detective, has agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to school you in becoming a master main idea/theme detective.
