Geologic History: The Geologic Time Scale

interactive Timeline: Tour of Geologic Time

You are now going to take a tour back in deep history. This tour will go all the way back to Earth’s formation and will go over the major geologic events that have taken place since then. As you go through the tour, you will probably want to take some notes on the major characteristics of each chunk of geologic time. The earliest three eons will only be discussed at the eon level. The final eon will be broken down into its constituent eras because it is the eon in which we now live and in which most of Earth’s living things have evolved.

The earliest and most ancient eon of geologic time is the Hadean Eon. It began at Earth’s formation 4.65 billion years ago and ended roughly 3.8 billion years ago. This is where your tour begins.
