Read Chapter 16, Interest Groups, pp 566-595 in your text before completing the rest of this section. The section activities will require that you are able to readily access the information.

For this second reading assignment you should be able to:

• Recognize why some interest groups are successful and some are not.
• Compare and contrast single issue interest groups with interest groups favoring broad issues.
• Examine the increase in the number of interest groups in American politics.
• Analyze the functions of lobbyists.
• Analyze the causes and effects of the growth of interest groups and PAC’s in the American political system.
• Describe the affects of interests groups on the election process.
