Multiplying Numbers with Powers of 10

When two numbers are multiplied (or divided), you must first multiply (or divide) the simple parts and then the powers of 10.

Examples

  1. two point zero times ten cubed times five point five times ten to the fourth power equals the quantity of two point zero times five point five end quantity times the quantity of ten cubed times ten to the fourth equals eleven times ten to the seventh power
    In scientific notation, this number would have to be written as 1.1 x 108

  2. the fraction eight point two times ten to the fifth over two point zero times ten squared equals the quantity eight point two divided by two point zero end quantity times the quantity ten to the fifth divided by ten squared equals four point one times ten to the third power

  3. twenty thousandths times three thousand six hundred equals the quantity of two point zero times ten to the negative two power end quantity times the quantity three point six times ten cubed equals seven point two times ten
