Unit 3 Journal: Entry #3
Make another wind instrument, this time just using a bottle and water. Find a bottle that holds about 20 oz. of liquid. Fill it about half way with water and blow across the top of the bottle. It should produce a tone. Now add more water to the bottle and blow across the top. Is the resulting sound higher or lower? Pour most of the water out. What does it sound like now when you blow across it?
Line up several bottles with varying amounts of water in them. Try to play a song.
What you should have determined from this experiment is that bottles with more water in them have a smaller column of air, and therefore produce a higher pitched sound. Write about your discoveries in the Unit 3 Journal located in the Unit 3: Musical Instruments folder.
