Linear and Quadratic Functions: Determining a Quadratic Function

Section Warm-Up

Before we work on writing quadratic functions, let’s review the zeros, also known as the roots, of a function. Remember the zeros or roots of a quadratic are where the graph crosses the x-axis and where the y-value is equal to zero.

think icon As a warm-up, find the zeros of the following graphs. Look at each graph, think about it, and then click on the graph to reveal the solution.

Warm-up number 1; graph of y = x2 – x – 6

The zeros are -2 and 3.

Warm-up number two; graph of y = -x2 – 3x + 10

The zeros are -5 and 2.
