2  Special Products

  • Square of a Sum                              (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab +b2
  • Square of a Difference                     (a – b)2 = a2 – 2ab + b2
  • Product of a Sum and Difference     (a + b) (a – b) = a2 – b2

Note: If you find it too difficult to memorize the formulas, you may continue to use FOIL to find these products. These are meant to be a shortcut, but they are not shorter if you have trouble with them. So, use your own judgment here.

Example 1: Square of a Sum or Difference
Find the square of each of the binomials below.
