History of the Internet and HTML

The Internet was first developed in the early 1980s as a way for educators to communicate and share information with each other. It was based on the idea of a network - many computers physically attached to each other - which had been around since the 1960s.

Web development actually got its start at CERN, the European Laboratory for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland in 1989.

The first versions of the Internet were text only. Tim Berners-Lee invented HTML or Hypertext Markup Language in 1992. It was officially recognized as the language of the Internet in 1993.

Throughout the 1990s the HTML code was expanded. New formatting including fonts, images and tables were slowly developed and standardized. It wasn't until 1993, when HTML was developed, that the first real image was posted on the Internet.

In 1996 Netscape introduced JavaScript which made Web sites interactive; instead of something you viewed, you could now actually interact with material on the Internet. In the late 1990s, companies started using a team of individuals which included Graphic Artists, Information Architects, Marketing Specialists, Database Administrators and more to develop and market the company's web page.

In 1997 the Internet had around 100,000 domain names (Web sites). By 2005 there were almost 83,000,000 domain names and there are now over 250,000,000 domain names with no sign of slowing down.
