Module 1: An Introduction to the Study of Marine Biology

Your assessment for this lesson is to write a one page paper using the following as your introductory paragraph. Your response should be no less than one page, single spaced (font 12 Times Roman). Copy and paste this beginning paragraph and then follow it with 3 additional paragraphs. The second paragraph should address how the oceans contribute to atmospheric oxygen and the third paragraph should address the contribution of the ocean's life to the global food chain. Finally, the last paragraph should summarize the importance of the oceans for life on Earth.

Example Response

The ocean is often considered to be the source of life for all life on Earth. It is believed that life began some 3.8 billion years ago in the organic soup of the oceans, beginning with primitive, single-celled organisms similar to today's Archaebacteria. Over the billions of years that followed, mutations gave rise to diversity and the process of natural selection acted on these variations leading to a rich and diverse population of organisms that range in complexity. Some of these organisms further adapted to live and succeed on land. It is in this regard that the oceans can be considered the source of all life. However, there are other contributions of the oceans that make it vital to all life on earth.

This response will address two of those contributions: oxygen and the food chain.
