Immigration: Introduction
Between 1880 and 1920 about 10 million people immigrated to the United States. Most of them came from European countries, but the Southwest and far West included immigrants from Mexico and Asian countries. They came into port cities across the country including Galveston and Indianola, Texas, as well as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The most famous immigrant depot was Ellis Island in New York. In this section, we will examine immigration patterns and the sentiment of native-born Americans. Lastly, we will explore the lives of some immigrants who were able to improve their station in life while others lived in extreme poverty.
