Democratic Republicans

Beginning in 1793, the nation saw the emergence of the first political party. Artisans and tradesmen began forming organizations known as Democratic Societies to oppose the Federalists. They were initially called Democratic Republicans because they advocated a more democratic republic. However, historians have dubbed the group Jeffersonian Republicans, based on their political views, which were favored by Jefferson. With the growing criticism that stemmed from the Jeffersonian Republicans, President Washington decided not to run for a third term. He set a precedent in establishing only two terms in office.
