Twentieth Century: Influential Events, Institutions, and people

During your own lifetime, you have witnessed technology and cultural changes that occurred rapidly, over years, months, or even days or minutes.  Musicians, artists, and writers during this time period were all experimenting with what it meant to create music, art, and literature.  As you can imagine, the general public and even those more open to new musical ideas did not always appreciate these new styles and experiments at the time.  Some of these composers were wildly famous during their lifetimes, while others did not gain appreciation until after their deaths.  The music of the 20th Century challenges our own definition of what is music.
