This project is worth 40 points. Part 1 is due now. Provence France is divided into 22 regions. Each region has its own style and flavor, making it unique from the others, even though they are all part of France. Provence, in Southeastern France, along the Mediterranean, has been inhabited by many different groups in the past. Before the arrival of the Greeks and Romans, the Celts and Ligurians had settled in that area. In about 600 B.C., the Phoenicians established the Greek settlement of Massalia, which is present-day Marseilles. The Greeks are very significant to French history as they are the ones that introduced the grape vine to the region. The city of Nice was an outpost of Massalia and came under pirate attack in 181 B.C. Rome came to the rescue at that time and thus began the Roman domination of the south of France. The picture above is along the coast at Nice. Activités pour s'entraîner You are now ready for the Section Quiz. Then go on to Section 2. |
