TV presentation Les Vêtements
One important reason to know what the weather is like is to know what we should wear. Watch the slides here to learn the names of some clothing items in French

Additional clothing vocabulary is in this chart. Be sure to click on each one to repeat the item and do this as many times as you wish so that you feel completely confident with the new vocabulary. We will be using it quite a bit in this unit.

Une blouse?
You most likely noticed the small words in front of the articles of clothing. These little words, un, une, des, are similar to the words le, la, les that we learned in Unit 2. Do you remember that we called le, la, les definite articles? They mean "the" in English. The words you saw in front of the articles of clothing are known as indefinite articles and they mean a, an, or some in English. In English, we can leave out the articles (both definite and indefinite) at times, but in French, they are used more frequently so we need to learn about them. Looking at the word list below, see if you can guess what the words mean in English. Click on each word to see what its meaning is.

une chemise
des lunettes de soleil
une parapluie
un imperméable
des bottes
une veste
un pull
des chaussures
des chaussettes
une écharpe

Just like the definite articles, there are four forms to these articles:

masculine singular un masculine plural des
feminine singular une feminine plural des

Let's talk about gender again...
In Unit 2, you learned that all nouns in French have a gender. They are either masculine or feminine. You can see from your new vocabulary that these nouns are not living things, yet they still have gender. As we said earlier, do not think of the items as either belonging to a male or female, or having been purchased or made by one or the other. Think of gender only in terms of the technical part of the word. Just learn the words as they are and learn the gender along with it. How are you going to learn the gender along with the word? Pay close attention to the article that comes with it. If it has un or le in front of it, it is masculine. If it has une or la in front of it, it is feminine.

  Practice Activity

Practice Activity Write these questions in your notebook. Click on the noun after you've answered each question to see sample answers.

Practice putting the definite article in front of these nouns and then the indefinite article in front of them. Click on each noun to see if you have done them correctly.

veste veste
T shirt T shirt
chaussettes chaussettes
pyjamas pyjamas
ceinture ceinture
gants gants
la jupe jupe
robe robe
chaussures chaussures
lunettes de soleil lunettes de soleill

Do you understand the difference between la veste and une veste? La veste is the jacket. Une veste is a jacket. Though it seems like a small difference, you will learn that these are very important differences.

  tpr Bougeons!! Let's get moving...
View and do. View the presentation and do the actions that you are asked to do in it. This will help you remember the meanings of the words in the unit as research shows that when you add a physical action to an academic lesson, the level of comprehension is increased immeasurably. After you have viewed the presentation, be sure to go take the TPR 2A Quiz.
