Journal: Landforms and Sand
Grab a piece of coarse sandpaper and compare how it feels to actual beach sand or playground sand you may have walked across at some point.
What is sandpaper used for? What property does it have that makes it suitable for that purpose?
Sandpaper is used as an abrasive to smooth and wear down rough surfaces. For example, a jagged piece of wood can be rubbed with sandpaper to smooth it out and shape it. Sandpaper is able to do this because it is gritty and hard. Like bunches of individual sand grains, sandpaper can grind against a surface until it is worn down and smoothed.
Now study the landform in the picture. Answer the following questions in your journal:
- How could this landform have been created by the action of sand?
- What environmental conditions would be necessary to form such a landform?
Please write your journal entry in theĀ Journal template. You will be prompted at the end of this unit to turn in all of your journal entries.
