Rational Functions: Introduction

Warm-Up Icon Unit Warm-Up

In this unit we will be studying rational functions. Before we begin working on this unit, take some time to study these types of functions. Analyze the following three functions and then answer the questions in your notes. Keep these notes handy as you work through this unit.

f of x equals the quotient of x plus 4 divided by x minus 1

f of x equals the quotient of x divided by x plus 3

f of x equals the quotient of x minus 9 divided by x plus 1, plus 1

  1. What is the general shape of these functions?
  2. How might you find domain and range of these functions?
  3. What makes these functions different from linear, square root, cubic, and quadratic functions?
  4. Use GCalc to graph these functions and describe them in detail in your notes.

Click on the GCalc image. Double click on the "Graph Plugin" to graph a linear equation. To adjust the window properties, go to the "Edit" menus and then "Properties". Click on the "View" tab and adjust the maximum and minimum x- and y-values.
