People and Politics: Political Parties

Democrats, Republicans, and Independents

For what does each of the parties stand? Most voters have a party image of each party. Consider rational-choice theory and how the parties market themselves to the American electorate much as businesses market their products to consumers.

Visit both the Republican Party and Democratic Party websites and find copies of their platforms which state their beliefs. Review the platforms.

Then choose one of the parties and create a marketing campaign to convince others to join the party. Think about the party’s image and its platform and try to attract voters who are independents to join.

Your marketing campaign can be any of the following:

  • A print ad for a magazine or newspaper
  • A radio commercial
  • A television commercial
  • A brochure or pamphlet for distribution
  • An e-mail and text message series
  • A website
