Reading Assignment:

Read Chapter 5, Civil Liberties, pages 152-191 in your text. As you read focus on the following:

1. Court cases that developed First Amendment rights.
2. The incorporation of the Bill of Rights in the federal system.
3. The rulings of the Supreme Court on First Amendment protections (see Supreme Court Cases).
4. Examples of protected speech and unprotected speech.
5. The conflict between free speech and a fair trial and free speech and public order.

Use the reading guide to study the Bill of Rights and then keep the sheet as a reference.
