Which of these diagrams will work and why?

Image a is a battery sitting next to a light bulb with a single wire connected directly from the top of the battery to the bottom of the light. Image b is a battery sitting beneath a light bulb with a single wire connected from the top of the battery to the light bulb back to the top of the battery. Image c is battery and light bulb where the single wire starts at the bottom of the battery, connects to the side of the metal casing on the light bulb, and the light bulb itself sits on top of the battery.
