Preventing Disease: Infectious Disease Continued

activityWebQuest: Rabies, Small Pox, and Bird Flu5 points

Thermometer showing a fever
A temperature over 98.6 degrees F is considered a fever.

Rabies, smallpox, and bird flu are all caused by a virus and are extremely dangerous to humans. Because they are caused by a virus, we can only treat the symptoms. We must rely on the body's natural immune system to fight off the infection. Prevention is very important for these viral infections.

For these diseases, visit the websites below to complete a WebQuest, and then complete the chart. Use the chart you downloaded earlier to enter information and submit for a grade. This version of the chart has all of the childhood infectious diseases and common infectious diseases that we will cover. Complete the chart as you move through the lessons. Your quizzes and exams will have questions drawn from these WebQuests.

Disease Causative Organism Symptoms Treatment Mode of transmission Prevention Unique Things About Disease
Rabies           Once symptoms show up, rabies is almost 100% fatal. Death is slow and painful.
Smallpox           In recent years, smallpox has become associated with possible terrorist attacks because the population is no longer given vaccinations for smallpox.
Bird Flu           Experts believe that if human transmission becomes possible, massive fatalities could occur.
