Unit Warm-Up
Before we begin, let’s start working with some concepts that you are going to need for the rest of the unit. For this warm-up, you are going to take a set of points and map them using an organizational tool. For example, let’s take the ordered pairs {(2, 3), (4, 5), (5, 6), (5, 10)}. At times it is hard to see these ordered pairs when you are looking at them in a list. We are going to organize these points in a map that is easier to see.
The first thing is to write the x- and y-values in two columns:
x |
y |
2 |
3 |
4 |
5 |
5 |
6 |
10 |
Now we can map these x- and y-values:
Now it is your turn to try a few problems. Use a piece of paper to map the following ordered pairs. Keep your work handy since we will be using it later in the unit.
1. {(-1, 3), (2, 0), (3, 5), (5, 5)}
2. {(4, -2), (5, 0), (10, 10), (11, 12)}
3. {(-3, 3), (-2, 5), (-2, 9), (0, 0), (1, 4), (3, 8)}
Keep this mapping tool in mind as we begin this unit. The correct mapping will appear in the first section and you will be able to check your work at that time.
