The Growing Republic: Introduction

warm-up Unit Warm-Up

In the previous unit, you learned about the American Revolution. Chances are, you probably already knew something about the revolution before starting this course. Nearly everybody in America has at least heard of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. And whether they have taken a history course or not, most Americans know something about what happened on July 4, 1776.

The same is true for the Civil War. Since this course hasn't covered the war yet, you're probably not ready to take a quiz on the Civil War, but you probably know something about it. As with the American Revolution, most citizens of the United States have some knowledge of the Civil War.

But what about the period between Washington's presidency and the Civil War? What happened in the United States during those six-plus decades? You've already learned that John Adams was the nation's second president, but what about his successors? Who were the U.S. presidents between Adams and Abraham Lincoln? What major events occurred in the first half of the nineteenth century? Most Americans generally have less knowledge about this period than they have about the Revolutionary Era and the Civil War.
